This year’s Village Golf Day was held at Wrotham Heath Golf Club – on Monday, the 19th May, and was attended by 18 golfers, comprising 9 Underrivians and 9 guests. The weather started a little overcast but as the afternoon progressed the skies cleared, and the sunshine ensued. We enjoyed a hearty breakfast and coffee before venturing onto the course which was in superb condition. Throughout the day we enjoyed great company, good golf, and perfect golfing weather in the beautiful Kent countryside and heathland.
The men’s event was hotly contested with, Edward Alexander (Fiona Brooks’ – grandson) winning the Underriver Decanter with forty-two points, closely followed on equal 41 points by Tony Deacon (guest of Marc Russell-Jones) and Roger Heaton (guest of Miles Hayward) – Tony just taking second place on count back. In the lady’s competition Sue Mitchell (Guest of Andy Bligh) took the honours winning the Anna Hurrion Trophy. The team Stapleford event was dominated by the on form “Brooks Family Trio” of, Alistair Brooks, Stuart Alexander, and Edward Alexander. Ed Walker (guest of Marc Russell-Jones) with a super tee shot on the 17th won the nearest the pin competition. Lastly the lucky ball competition meant only five of our eighteen golfers returned with their starting ball - and was won by Andy Bligh – who thankfully restored a little pride for the Underriver golfers who this year were outplayed by our guests!
Miles Hayward presented the awards at the late afternoon prize giving, where we all enjoyed some restorative refreshments and conversation of the afternoon’s endeavours. The event raised over £220.00 for the UVA funds, so thank you to all our golfers and, once again, for the kind sponsorship by Knight Frank (via Ed Rook).
